Welcome to the Web Site for the Charleston,
West Virginia Valley of the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry
(Southern Jurisdiction) |
We hope you find all the information you desire about us in
these pages.
The Scottish Rite of Freemasonry is a wonderful organization of
good men striving to be better.
We, in addition to our Fraternal endeavors are deep into
Philanthropies.
Our
Childhood Language Disorder Center, one of 170 such
clinics in the Southern Jurisdiction, is one of the largest in
the Country. In more than 20 years of Therapy we have averaged
serving 70 children per week with communication problems with
over 5000 patient visits a year. The Northern Jurisdiction also
has a similar program.
In addition to our Language Center, we also host other
Philanthropies: the
Almoner's Fund, an anonymous giving to people with
immediate needs; the
Stage Fund,
to preserve our Theatre and the
scenery found therein; and a Foundation to preserve our
historic building; and the
Patriotism Education Project, operated by our
Pocahontas Scottish Rite Club. Also the
Scottish Rite Foundation of West Virginia accepts
donations for their Scholarship program.
Our building was built prior to 1900 and has had a colorful
background. It was originally constructed as an Armory, when
the Army used Horses and Mules. After that, the building was
used as a Skating Rink. It was finally taken over by the
Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry
and the
Ancient and Arabic Order of the Nobles of the Mystic Shrine
around 1921. Since the Shrine moved to more modern quarters,
the building has been totally operated by the Scottish Rite.
At one time our Theatre was one of the few Auditoriums in
Charleston and was used by the Community a great deal. In
recent years, we have been happy to offer our spaces to many of
the Communities non-profit organizations for meetings and have
served over 30 such organizations.
Our Building has recently been placed on the National Register
of Historic Places by virtue of it's location in the Downtown
Charleston Historic District.
We are constantly working to maintain and preserve our beautiful
building as a gift not only to our membership but also to the
people of the City of Charleston and the surrounding area.
Our membership comes from most of Southern West Virginia and
numbers approximately 3000. Three thousand men ready and
willing to serve their Families and their Communities through
the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry.
